Xiaomi is billed to launched the Mi 11 Pro soon and a new report has now tipped the upcoming flagship to make at least one major improvement over the Mi 11 that was released last week. Yes, the Mi 11 Pro is expected to ditch the 108 MP on the Mi 11 in favor of a more sophisticated sensor.

Xiaomi launched the Mi 11 right at the end of the last year. Surprisingly, it didn’t launch the Mi 11 Pro at the same time, and that device will be unveiled soon. Thankfully, however, it will offer some neat upgrades over the regular Mi 11, especially in terms of camera hardware.

A while ago, we were critical about the Mi 11’s main camera. The new flagship phone sports a triple-camera setup at the back, with the main shooter being a 108 MP sensor. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, but that sensor is the ISOCELL Bright HMX—the same sensor used on the Mi Note 10 from 2019. Hardly cutting-edge at this point.

The Mi 11 Pro won’t use the same sensor, though, it appears. According to a new report, the Xiaomi flagship will sport Samsung’s 50 MP sensor, the S5KGN1. That’s more like it. The GN1 is a more recent sensor, as it was launched in May last year. While it’s the same size as the HMX on the Mi 11, it offers bigger pixels (1.2μm versus 0.8μm) which matches the Note 20 Ultra’s 2.4μm after binning.

There’s also a chance that the Mi 11 Pro uses a 200 MP camera. There have been sightings of a Xiaomi device with such hardware over the past few weeks, and recent reports claim that Samsung will launch a 200 MP CMOS sensor shortly.

We saw Xiaomi move to a 48 MP sensor from OmniVision on the Mi 10 Ultra—with quite impressive results. That’s evidence that the company acknowledges the limitations of the HMX and is willing to go a step further on its more important devices. At the very least, we expect the Mi 11 Pro’s cameras to be competitive.
